Former world champion Mads Pedersen (Track) won the 8th stage of the Tour de France in Limoges this Saturday in the sprint, beating the Belgians Jasper Philipsen (Alpesin) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo) at the finish line. The stage was negatively marked by the retirement of Briton Mark Cavendish (Astana) due to a fall. He fractured his right collarbone, which loosened an acromioclavicular screw (installed after a fall in the 2017 Tour de France), the team said. Thus, he is not allowed (at least in this edition) to break the record of victories in the French competitions, which he shares with the Belgian Eddy Merckx: 34 each.
The 200.7 km run went smoothly. The run of the day with three cyclists was always controlled by the peloton. In the final kilometers, Jumbo took the lead to set up a sprint for Van Aert. But Pedersen was the strongest.
Jonas Wingegaard (Jumbo) leads the way with Tadej Pogacar (UAE) 25 seconds back. Ruben Guerreiro (Movistar) is 30th, Nelson Oliveira is 70th and Rui Costa is 79th. This Sunday is the 9th stage, reaching the top of the Puy de Dome, where the Tour has not been for 35 years.
