Admiral Gouveia y Melo, National Maritime Authority and head of the navy, stressed on Tuesday the importance of a “dual-use navy” in the military and non-military activities that take place on the maritime frontier. Gouveia y Melo spoke at the opening of a conference at the Escola Naval School, which coincides with the graduation of 166 agents, 23 of which are Portuguese, who have completed the training program and will join the permanent corps of the European Border and Coast Guard. Gouveia y Melo underlined that the maritime activities are of various actors and all kinds of activities, from military to recreational, passing through trade, trade of a different nature and migration. He also highlighted the work of the Frontex agency in protecting external borders. It is estimated that migratory flows by sea to Europe will increase in the coming years.
Deputy Secretary of State and National Defense Marco Capitan Ferreira mentioned the contribution of the Maritime Police to Frontex, continuous cooperation since 2014, highlighting the work of the Portuguese agents.
The event, which continues on Wednesday, was chaired by Frontex Executive Director Aija Kalna. A panel was held on the topic “The borders of the European Union in the digital age” and another one on the topic “The unstable situation at the external borders”.
