Marques Mendez allowed the candidacy for the presidency of the Republic

Former SDP President Luis Marques Mendez admitted this Sunday his candidacy for the presidency “if it is good for the country” and “the minimum conditions for promotion”, rejecting any decision or agreement with the leader of the Social Democrats for the time being.

In his TV commentary on SIC, Méndez was asked about the political significance of his presence at the Festa do Pontal, PSD’s mid-August lease in the Algarve, and whether it was related to Luis Montenegro’s possible agreement to support his candidacy for the presidency. Belen.

“Never in my life have I spoken to Luis Montenegro about presidential elections, there is nothing to talk about, there is no agreement,” Marques Mendez assured, stating that at the moment “there is no solution, not even a desire.”

However, the former SDP chairman wanted to add the conditions for making such a decision or not in the future.

“If one day I think that by nominating a candidate for the post of President of the Republic, I can be useful to the country – that’s what matters – if I see that my candidacy and the minimum conditions for its implementation bring some benefit to the country, I am frank, I will make this decision regardless of consent or lack thereof,” he said.

The former leader of the parliament stressed that this is “a free, personal and individual decision.”

“I insist: if there is a benefit for the country and a minimum of conditions, if these requirements are not met, there will be no decision and everything is in order,” he said, considering that “this is a very difficult decision” and stressing that before the presidential elections in January 2026 is “an eternity”.

Luis Marques Méndez, 65, lawyer and TV commentator, was Deputy Minister of Cavaco Silva and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs in Durau Barroso’s government.

He was elected President of the SDP in April 2005, re-elected in the direct elections he ran with the party in 2006, and was succeeded in 2007 by Luis Filipe Menezes.
