Culture Minister Pedro Adan e Silva mourned the death of director and actor Carlos Aviles, “a decisive figure in the renewal of Portuguese theater.”
Carlos Aviles died this Wednesday at the age of 88 in Cascais.
In a statement published on the official account of the Ministry of Culture on the social network X, Pedro Adao e Silva recalls that “having worked with international figures who revolutionized the art of representation in the 20th century, Aviles played an equally pioneering role in Portugal.”
Carlos Aviles founded the Teatro Experimental Theater of Cascais in 1965, a company where, as the Minister of Culture recalls, “it continued to work in full force.”
“For subsequent generations of actors, whom he continued to direct and train until last week, he was a master and mentor,” the official emphasizes.
Pedro Adao e Silva also recalls that Carlos Aviles “occupied the most responsible positions in the public service in his region, as director of the National Theater of D. Maria II and president of the Institute of Performing Arts.”
