Andre Ventura says the decision on the new airport should be made by the next government

President Chegi on Tuesday said the decision on the new airport should be made by the next government based on an agreement between the four biggest parties, arguing that “those who have waited 50 years can wait three months.”

Andre Ventura called for the decision on the new airport, “whatever the recommendations of the independent technical committee, to be left to the discretion of the next government, not the government of Antonio Costa.”

“Whoever has waited 50 years can wait three months,” the Chega leader said in a statement to reporters ahead of the party’s parliamentary days, which will take place from today to Wednesday in Matosinhos (Porto district).

President Chegi believed that “the four largest parties should agree on the location of the airport”, arguing that “the greater the consensus on this issue, the more positive it is in a democracy.”

Andre Ventura said that there were three months left before the legislative elections and stressed that this was a “structural decision for the future.”

“This is a big public project, it comes with very significant awards worth several hundred million euros, and I think in the last phase we’ve all had our share of governments entering into contracts and awards to distribute money to non-recommended companies,” he said.

While defending that the current government should not make decisions in this context, the Chegi leader believes that “there is no point in the next governments running the country based on the decisions of the Socialist Party.”

Andre Ventura also believes that “Portela airport is at the forefront in terms of capacity and efficiency”, stating that “any Portela plus solution that involves either a military airport or some sort of annex to the main airport is a transitional solution.” which does not solve the problem.”

“We need a new airport, it is not an appendage to Portela Airport,” he emphasized.
