The President of the Republic said this Sunday that the defense of human rights on his International Day “remains a pressing need and even more important at this time” than in other periods of history.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa marked the International Human Rights Day, which is celebrated this Sunday, with a message on the page of the Presidency of the Republic, in which he expresses solidarity with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres.
“On this day, the President of the Republic, joining the Secretary-General of the United Nations, emphasizes that human rights are the solution to many of the world’s problems, warning of the many forms in which they can be violated: war, gender-based violence, the climate emergency, the erosion of trust in multilateralism “, he says.
In the message, the head of state emphasizes that this year this date also marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
“The 30 articles of the Declaration go beyond values, cultures and borders, systematizing a set of universal, indivisible and inalienable rights, recognizing the equal dignity and worth of every person,” he emphasized.
In other words, “75 years ago, and for the first time in history, the international community agreed on a set of values and recognized that rights are inherent in all people and are not granted or abrogated by any particular state.”
“Celebrating this historic milestone underscores not only the longevity of this commitment, but also its importance. The protection of human rights remains a pressing need, and is even more important now than perhaps at other times in our shared history,” he says.
The President of the Republic calls for the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to be carried out “consciously” and for its “commitment to have a meaning in everyone’s daily life.”
Human Rights Day is celebrated annually on December 10 in connection with the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly in 1948.
