Rui Moreira says Porto will not provide opportunities to the capital’s transport company

The mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira, said this Monday that the municipality will not make the Porto Metropolitan transport company viable, but will continue to pay contributions corresponding to the conditions and routes of the new network.

“We are not interested in the capital company, STCP. [Sociedade de Transportes Coletivos do Porto] has no interest,” said Rui Moreira on the sidelines of a closed meeting of the municipal executive.

This Monday’s meeting was intended to discuss the second amendment to the inter-administrative agreement on the delegation of powers, following the unanimous approval on November 3 of the constitution of the Porto Metropolitan Transport Company.

As a result, the proposal was removed from the agenda by decision of the chairman of the chamber.

“This does not make any sense. These are the logical consequences,” said Rui Moreira, arguing that from now on the municipality will evaluate proposals of a metropolitan nature involving monetary contributions “one by one” and postpone “metropolitan solidarity.” .

“I am not saying that we will not cooperate with the Porto agglomeration, we will cooperate, but we will also look at ourselves from the point of view of the interests of Porto,” he emphasized.

The Municipality of Porto threatened to vote against all AMP discussions involving monetary contributions, after seven of the 17 municipalities refused to participate in the reconstruction work of the Coliseu do Porto, the support of which was unanimously approved by the municipalities present at the working meeting on October 20 held by the Porto Metropolitan Council.

Rui Moreira stressed to journalists that when distributing public funds, Porto “suspended contributions so that other municipalities, which, in fact, voted against.” [a reabilitação do Coliseu]had more funds.”

“The municipality of Porto has remained stable, guided by the principle of metropolitan solidarity, but solidarity is a principle that must embrace both sides,” he said.

A map comparing the distribution of funds from the previous community structure. [Portugal 2020] and current [Portugal 2030]shared with the councilors and to which Lusa had access, the municipality of Porto has an additional 543,208 euros, increasing from 38.6 million euros to 39.1 million euros.

According to the map, Santa Maria da Feira receives the largest increase in funds (more than 11.2 million euros), followed by Paredes (more than 7.7 million euros), Oliveira de Azemeis (more than 6.1 million euros), Arouca. (more than 5.8 million euros), Gondomar (more than 5.5 million euros), Santo Tirso (more than 5.4 million euros) and Vale de Cambra (more than 5.3 million euros).
