Five thousand houses were left without power due to damage in the capital of Mozambique

About five thousand houses in the capital of Mozambique were left without electricity due to an accident at 10 transformer substations, the Electricidade de Moçambique said in a statement.

The damage affected Costa do Sol and Triunfo, a coastal area of the Mozambique capital, as well as part of Bairro Ferroviario in the suburbs of Maputo, EDM said in a statement.

“EDM regrets the inconvenience this situation causes to affected customers and the general public (…). However, EDM technical teams are on the ground to restore normal power supply to the affected areas as soon as possible,” EDM added, asking for safety measures to be observed in the affected areas given the rain being felt in the capital.

Without going into detail about the reasons for the failure, the Mozambican public company described energy theft and vandalism of electricity infrastructure as one of the company’s “biggest challenges”, warning that the situation threatens the goal of universal energy access for all Mozambicans. by 2030.

According to company data published this month, EDM lost around 41 million metises (€584,000) in 2022 due to 265 reported incidents of electrical infrastructure vandalism in the country.

In addition to losses from energy theft and vandalism of electricity infrastructure recorded over the past four years, the institution “lost the ability to supply energy” to more than 500,000 new customers, EDM said at the time.
