The Altice Group workers’ union in Portugal (STPT) has written to Prime Minister António Costa about the possibility that a sale of Altice Portugal is already underway, warning of the “risks” of the process.
In a statement, the union structure said that “despite the situation in which the government” and the prime minister find themselves, “responsibility for the government’s infrastructure sector, which includes the communications sector, currently lies with António Costa.” “Who will be responsible for initiating a process of assessment of transactions that may lead, directly or indirectly, to the acquisition of control, direct or indirect, over infrastructure or strategic assets by natural or legal persons from countries third to the European Union.”
According to STPT, “there is no confirmation from the executive committee through the CEO.” [presidente executiva]“There is a high probability that such transactions are already being carried out in relation to Altice Portugal, as has been repeatedly reported in the media.”
The union also said it was “legally appropriate” for the Prime Minister to “now assess the risk that these legal transactions pose to defense and national security in the communications sector in which Altice Portugal operates,” pointing out that possible acquirers of the company “have a legal obligation” to forward “information and documents concerning the operation so that the Council of Ministers can exercise its right of opposition.”
STPT also emphasized that it has “the right to participate in company restructuring processes, especially when changes occur in working conditions.”
