The Grammys, the North American music awards ceremony, are scheduled for tonight in Los Angeles, early Monday in Europe, with Portuguese singer Maria Mendes among the nominees and Joni Mitchell’s debut performance.
Maria Mendez is a Grammy nominee for Best Arrangements, Instrumental and Vocals along with musician John Beasley for her version of “Com que Voz” from the 2022 live album Saudade, Color of Love.
The Portuguese artist has already been nominated for a Grammy in 2021 in the same category for her version of the song “Asas Fechadas”, also written by Amalia Rodrigues, which she recorded for the album “Close to me” with John Beasley and Metropole Orkest in the Netherlands.
At the 66th Grammy Awards, North American artist SZA is nominated in nine nominations, the most in a year that saw female artists dominate the major categories.
“Kill Bill” was nominated by SZA for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best R&B Performance. The album, titled “SOS,” is nominated for Album of the Year and Best Progressive R&B Album.
The all-female trio boygenius, made up of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus, has six Grammy nominations for Record of the Year, Not Strong Enough, Album of the Year (Record) and Best Rock ” Performance.
Also nominated in six categories are Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Brandi Clark, as well as Jean Baptiste and producer Jack Antonoff.
The list of 94 Grammy nominations spans a variety of music genres, from jazz to classical music, including rap, rock, metal, gospel and audiobooks.
This year, three new categories were created: “Best Pop Dance Recording”, “Best African Music Performance” and “Best Alternative Jazz Album”.
The ceremony will be hosted by comedian Trevor Noah, and of the performances scheduled for Sunday, the highlight will be the presence of (Grammy debut) Canadian artist Joni Mitchell, 80, in one of the rare live performances since she suffered an aneurysm in 2015.
