Authorities are investigating the circumstances under which the removal of stones and earth took place on two plots of land next to a house hit by a landslide in Palmeira de Faro, Esposende, it was announced this Wednesday.
Câmara de Esposende in the Braga region said in a statement that these stone and earth movements at the base of the slope were recorded in the summer of 2022 “and were not reported to the municipality and were not licensed. “.
In the early hours of 23 November, a landslide and large rocks hit a house in Palmeira de Faro, Esposenda, killing two 22-year-olds.
The Chamber launched a geotechnical survey conducted by Minho University at the same time as hiring a team from the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC) to determine the causes of the accident.
“The municipality of Esposende intends to find out the truth about this incident by combating the misinformation that has been spread about this,” the statement also says.
In December, the Esposende Socialist Party (PS) said the council was aware of the risks and urgency of intervening at the site of the landslide since 2019, and referred to the licensing in the same year of building a house on St. the top of the slope. .
A day after the landslide, local authorities decided to deny access to the affected area, which meant relocating residents to eight houses located there.
