Elon Musk sues the creator of ChatGPT

Elon Musk is suing OpenAI – the owner of ChatGPT – and its co-founders Sam Altman (CEO) and Greg Brockman for failing to fulfill their original contractual obligations.

The billionaire reportedly donated €40.6 million to the company over several years so it could develop artificial intelligence (AI) “for the benefit of humanity” and “not to increase private profits,” the complaint said.

Musk gives the example of GPT4, scheduled to launch on the 14th of this month, which he says is already a tool with “a level of artificial intelligence that can equal or exceed human intelligence” that is being used to “maximize Microsoft’s profits.”

Bill Gates poured billions of dollars into OpenAI and began using artificial intelligence to perform what he calls “routine tasks,” and Microsoft’s market value soared.

The Tesla founder and current owner of X (formerly Twitter) wants the court to clarify whether advanced AI models should be understood as artificial general intelligence and whether they can be licensed for profit.

He also wants to find out in court whether he can be reimbursed for donations he made for public inquiry purposes to a project that is now being used for purposes other than those envisaged in the contract.

Elon Musk is one of the signatories of a letter published last year asking for a pause in artificial intelligence development to better understand the impact of advances. He has repeatedly stated that he believes artificial intelligence is “one of the greatest threats to human life.”
