PCP Secretary General Paulo Raimundo warned this Thursday of the need for society to remain vigilant against possible violations of women’s rights, citing as an example the issue of voluntary termination of pregnancy, which was included in the campaign last week.
“We must always be vigilant and attentive. I believe that the achievements of April, in particular what it meant from a theoretical and practical point of view in promoting women’s rights and equality, are very much alive and rooted in our society. It is no coincidence and quite rightly that a very clear reaction arose that we are talking about moving forward, not backward. We remember the days when the door opened to move backwards on the law of voluntary termination of pregnancy,” he said.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a CDU delegation visiting an exhibition on journalist, writer and civil and human rights activist Maria Lamas at the Gulbenkian in Lisbon, Paulo Raimundo noted that the voices raised against the reopening of the referendum debate on the issue “is a sign that that Abril is alive.”
“But being alive and constant in the lives of people – and women in particular – we have to be on guard, because the attack is very great, the pressure is very great. life and his achievements. Having confidence that Abril is alive, we need to be careful and vigilant. Let no one think that rights are secured forever,” he emphasized.
On the eve of the next International Women’s Day, which will take place on Friday, the communist leader also confirmed that the implementation and protection of rights is necessary to ensure their continuity, intersecting this position with the actions of the PKP.
“Strength is needed to force them to exercise. So we and other people are naturally ready not only for defense, but also for another step that needs to be taken: we need to return April to everyone’s path,” he believed. .
