Madeira Airport damaged due to strong winds

Traffic at Madeira-Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport is restricted this Friday due to strong winds, with two flight cancellations and nine diversions recorded by 15:00.

According to the ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal page, which Lusa consulted around 15:00, eight flights landed in Madeira between 00:00 and 10:08, one turned around and another was cancelled.

After that, until 15:00, another flight was canceled and eight diverged, with no landings recorded at the region’s airport.

The departures list shows that two flights to Lisbon were cancelled, corresponding to the canceled arrivals.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a yellow warning for strong winds for the entire Madeira archipelago, which will be in effect from 12:00 to 18:00 this Friday.

The warning applies to the southern and northern coasts of the island of Madeira, as well as mountainous areas and the island of Porto Santo.

In IPMA terminology, a yellow warning is the second least severe on a scale of three and means “a situation of risk for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation.”

The Funchal Port Authority has also issued warnings for high winds and rough seas, which will remain in effect until 6am on Saturday.

“The entire maritime community and the general public are advised to exercise caution both when preparing to go to sea and while at sea or in coastal areas,” the department said in a statement.

The captain warns of the importance of strengthening the mooring and strict supervision of moored and anchored vessels and, on the other hand, to avoid walking near the sea or in places exposed to sea waves, such as the protective berths of ports, cliffs or beaches. avoiding being surprised by the wave.

Another recommendation is to avoid recreational fishing, especially near rocks and rocky areas that are frequently exposed to breaking waves.

“Under such conditions, the sea can easily reach apparently safe areas,” he warns.
