This Friday, the President of the Republic said that the dissolution of parliament under the PS government was a dream of the right, but it only happened due to unexpected circumstances: the trial and the dismissal of António Costa.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, who asked him about António Costa’s view that “chance led to the president’s decision to abolish the legislature late last year.” as he expected, on the right.
“It’s true. There was a process that we did not expect – without it there would have been no dissolution. There was a dismissal, which we did not expect, of the Prime Minister and the Secretary General of the PS – without if we would not have had the dissolution,” the head of state responded.
“It was the sum of these two realities that really led to the dissolution of the Assembly of the Republic,” he added.
According to the President of the Republic, dissolution “has been a long-standing dream of the Portuguese right since 2016, but it only came true because two events came together: a process that no one expected or foresaw, and the dismissal of the President of the Republic.” Prime Minister and Secretary General of the PS.”
António Costa wrote about the events of last November in the foreword to a book by the former president of the PS parliamentary group, Eurico Brillante Díaz, entitled “Written Words”.
“What is certain is that we prematurely dissolved this Legislative Assembly by decision of the President of the Republic. Chance made the decision, but since October 2022 the right has been frantically looking for a pretext for dissolution,” retained the former prime minister.
