This Monday, the PKP asked questions to the Minister of Labor regarding the announcement that Autoeuropa would resort to “dismissal”, considering it to be an abusive resource and “another social security scam”.
In a question sent to Maria do Rosario Palma Ramalho, PCP parliamentary leader Paula Santos claims that Autoeuropa “has received countless public support” and is now “again abusing the ‘dismissal’ mechanism due to parliamentary decisions.” the company itself, and not due to any unforeseen event.”
The PCP states that “the reasons provided by the company for stopping the production process are the work carried out to adapt the company to future production and the decarbonization of the production process.”
“That is, the company intends to resort to “downsizing” to implement planned investments, which hardly fits into the framework of “downsizing”,” the statement says.
The party warns that “the stoppage of production at Autoeuropa, in addition to creating serious social and economic problems for its workers and their families, also has consequences and impacts on thousands of other workers from more than 30 companies in different regions of the country who are involved in production process of this important company.”
“The issue that is re-emerging today is whether public institutions are accessible, and this corresponds to yet another waste of public welfare resources to benefit economic groups that is becoming increasingly apparent,” he says.
The PKP argues that, faced with this situation, the government must take “swift, flexible and effective measures” to prevent a recurrence of situations that have occurred in the past and ensure the continuation of employment, income and rights for all workers, direct and indirect.
In this context, the party asks the Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security “what steps the government will take to ensure compliance with the criteria for the application of the ‘cut’, as well as supervision to prevent its abuse.”
“What measures does the Government intend to take to ensure that the rights and jobs of all Autoeuropa workers and Autoeuropa supply companies are protected, and who will be affected by this decision?” they also ask.
The Autoeuropa workers’ committee said this Thursday that the company’s management would implement temporary shutdowns in June and July due to a restructuring aimed at decarbonizing the plant, but warned that it would not accept wage penalties for workers.
The Inter-Union Federation stressed that the situation at Autoeuropa was reviewed by the previous government in September 2023 and that the shutdown, which was taking place at that time, “created additional social and economic problems for many thousands of Autoeuropa workers and more than 30 companies.” “I participate in the production process.
This union structure argued that job security and income must be guaranteed and that all situations must be subject to “prior and thorough approval and strict screening.”
According to an internal statement released by the Workers’ Committee (CT) of the Volkswagen automobile plant in Palmela, Setubal district, the company, as defined by current legislation, said it intends to begin negotiations next week on the application. “layoffs” for eight days in June and 13 days in July.
Autoeuropa CT said that “in the context in which this ‘dismissal’ applies, the company will not allow any reduction in wages for employees.”
