PCP accuses government of ‘multiplying excuses’ to evade promises

This Sunday, the Secretary General of the PKP criticized the AD government for being “in the service of economic groups”, seeking to “multiply the excuses for not fulfilling the commitments” made to various sectors of government.

“Everything serves the cause of a few, at the same time [o Governo] tends to multiply excuses for non-fulfillment of obligations to various sectors of workers, which can now be seen in various manifestations of public administration,” said Paulo Raimundo.

Speaking in Baleisana, Beja district, in honor of rural worker Catarina Eufemia on the day that marks the 70th anniversary of her murder, the PCP secretary general referred to the “difficult situation” that exists in Portugal.

He gave the example of a situation “characterized by low wages, low pensions, difficulties in accessing health care, housing, the closure of public services”, in other words, “specific problems and difficult life profiles for the majority” of the Portuguese.

But at the same time, he continued, “here is a government prepared not to solve any of these problems, but committed to moving forward and as quickly as possible with its program, which is at the service of economic groups that continue to be replenished through effort, labor and victims of all of us.”

To illustrate this criticism, Paulo Raimundo referred to the bank’s profits in the first quarter of the year: “Look at these latest bank figures and their profit of 560 thousand euros per hour.”

The current government “uses all existing problems not to solve them according to the needs of the majority, but to always open up new business opportunities for the hands of a small minority,” he criticized.

According to the PCP leader, the executive led by Luis Montenegro is “using the housing drama to expand speculation and further service real estate funds and banks.”

And he also “exploits health difficulties to sooner or later transfer even more public resources to economic groups, those who make illness a business.”

“He uses low wages, which are common in our society, to create a pretext for further tax cuts for large companies that have 25 million euros in profit per day,” he stressed.

According to Paulo Raimundo, “this is what the government wants when talking about IRC, IRS”, it intends to “pave the way for lower IRC for large companies and Derramah.”

“We do not accept policies that are beneficial and we kneel before economic groups,” he stressed.

In his speech, the communist leader also touched on the government’s announcement last week to build a new airport in the Lisbon region at the Campo de Tiro de Alcochete.

“What is required is to move forward with the phased construction of the airport” rather than “seek to guarantee a few more millions for the da Vinci multinational”, he argued, arguing that Beja airport must be taken advantage of in the meantime.

Every year, the PKP pays tribute to the memory of Katarina Eufemia, who was killed by the forces of the fascist regime on May 19, 1954 in Baleisan, a small village in the municipality of Beja.
