The Minister of Justice, Rita Alarcan Giudice, assured this Monday that she will “soon” present the anti-corruption package promised by the government, after already meeting with parties and various agents in the judicial sector.
“We will soon present the findings of our work with a list of measures identified as priorities, both from a prevention and repression perspective, prioritizing, as far as possible, areas where consensus is expected to be greater,” stated the minister. Minister at the opening of the Lawyers’ Summit, organized by the newspaper ECO, in Lisbon.
Rita Alarcao Judice spoke about the meetings she has held since taking office with organizations and trade unions in the sector and acknowledged the need for reforms in the face of a “slow, expensive, inaccessible, ineffective and ill-equipped” justice system in the eyes of citizens, but ensured that the executive the authorities will not stop acting and implementing the program.
“I confirm, if there were any doubts, that the government will carry out its program. The government will indeed carry out the justice reform that its program envisages. And it will do this in the interests of all citizens,” the minister noted, adding that “naturally, he will listen to other parties having seats in parliament.”
The Minister of Justice also listed some measures and several tasks that are already planned in various areas, namely in terms of economic justice, support for the most vulnerable victims, procedural relations with citizens and working conditions for professionals, defending that “it is not acceptable to have courts where it rains” or “degraded prisons in which there are no conditions for prisoners and the guards themselves.”
“The lack of public investment in the justice sector in recent years has in no way given dignity to those who work there, and has largely contributed to the decline in the attractiveness of these professions,” Rita Alarcao Judice summarized in her speech.
The Minister of Justice also addressed “the need to denationalize political choices in the justice sector” and acknowledged the existence of “many leaders at the end of their terms of office,” reaffirming the primacy of “competence criteria” for these appointments.
When asked directly about the Republic’s prosecutor general, whose term ends in October, and her relationship with citizens, Rita Alarcão Judice said that there must be “a different relationship.”
