Most of the 21 new MEPs will make their debut in Brussels.

Of the 21 Portuguese MPs elected this Sunday, there are young people, former ministers, mayors and former parliamentary leaders, but most of them are making their debut in the European Parliament.

Below is a list and short biography of elected Portuguese MEPs:

The Socialist Party elected eight deputies

The head of the PS list, Marta Temido, is 50 years old and from Coimbra. She holds a PhD in International Health and served as Minister of Health in the XXI, XXII and XXIII constitutional governments (2018–2022). The timing of its execution coincided with the emergence and fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Francisco Assis is 59 years old and from the city of Amarante. University professor and politician, the current Socialist MP in the Assembly of the Republic returns to the European Parliament, where he previously served as an MEP between 2004 and 2009. He also served as president of the Amarante City Council from 1989 to 1995.

Ana Catarina Mendes is from Lisbon and is 51 years old. She served as Deputy Minister for Parliamentary Affairs in the XXIII Constitutional Government led by António Costa. From 2015 to 2019 she was Deputy Secretary General of the PS.

Bruno Gonçalves is 27 years old, holds a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minho and was born in Braga. He was a leader of the Socialist Youth and Braga and is the current General Secretary of the Youth of the Socialist International.

With a law degree, André Rodriguez was the candidate nominated by the Azores for the national PS list in the European elections. The 47-year-old socialist is a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores and vice-president of the parliamentary group PS.

Carla Tavares is 53 years old and has been president of the City Council of Amadora since 2013 and of the Lisbon Metropolitan District since 2021. From 1999 to 2022, she was a member of the Assembly of the Republic of the VIII Legislative Assembly.

Isilda Gomes is a native of the Guarda district and president of the Portimão City Council since 2013. The 73-year-old socialist also heads the National Association of Socialist Mayors and the Natural Resources Commission of the Committee of the Regions. Between 2007 and 2011 she served as civil governor of the Faro region.

Sergio Gonçalves is 45 years old, he has a higher education in economics and a master’s degree in international management. Since 2019, he has been a PS deputy in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira. He was the president of PS-Madeira.

Democratic Alliance elected seven deputies

The head of the AD list, Sebastian Bugalho, 28, was a political science student at the Institute of Political Studies at the Catholic University. In 2019, he stood as an independent candidate on the SDS-PP parliamentary candidate list in the European elections. He was a television commentator and columnist.

Ana Miguel Pedro, 35, is a member of the National Political Committee of the CDS-PP. With a Master’s degree in Law and Economic Sciences from the Faculty of Law of the University of Porto, Ana Miguel Pedro worked as an advisor to the CDS-PP in the European Parliament.

Paulo Cunha was born in August 1971 and received his law degree from the University of Luciada in Porto. Paulo Cunha was born in Vila Nova de Famalicão, the municipality he led from 2013 to 2021. From July he took on the role of vice-president of the SDP.

Helder Sousa Silva, 59, is president of the Mafra city council. He was born in the municipality he heads and is also vice-president of the Lisbon Metropolitan Council.

Lydia Pereira, 31, born in Coimbra, was the PSD’s number two in the 2019 European elections. In April, she was unanimously elected to the post of vice-president of the parliamentary group of the European People’s Party (PPE). taking the position played by Paulo Rangel.

Sergio Humberto was born in November 1975 in Trofa, the municipality he has led since 2013. He was a member of the Assembly of the Republic in the XII government, and since September 2022 he is president of the Porto district of the PSD.

Paulo Nascimento Cabral, 51, is an adviser for the Azores and energy at REPER, the Permanent Representation of Portugal to the European Union. He has already worked as an advisor and head of the office of SDP MEPs in the European Parliament.

Chega elects two MPs for the first time

The head of the Chegi list, António Tangier Correa, is 72 years old and from Lisbon. He held diplomatic posts for 40 years, being Consul General of Portugal in Goa and Rio de Janeiro, Ambassador of Portugal to Bosnia, Serbia, Israel, Egypt, Qatar, Lithuania and First Secretary of the Portuguese Embassy in Beijing. He is currently the first vice president of the Chegi National Council.

Former social democrat Thiago Moreira de Sá, born in Lisbon 53 years ago, is a professor at the New University of Lisbon and a researcher at the Portuguese Institute of International Relations. He was a member of the Assembly of the Republic of the XV Legislative Assembly (2022).

“Liberal Initiative” elects two deputies for the first time

The head of the IL list, João Cotrim de Figueiredo, 62, was the first MP elected by IL in the Assembly of the Republic in 2019. Cotrim de Figueiredo, born in Lisbon, was re-elected in the 2022 legislative elections, having served as IL president between 2019 and 2023.

Ana Martins, originally from the Azores but living in Lisbon, has a law degree and specializes in political science. In 2019, he was included as an independent candidate for fourth place on the IL list for the European Parliament elections and as a member of the party led the Azores list in the national legislative elections.

The left bloc elects a deputy

The head of the BE list, Catarina Martins, is from Porto and is 50 years old. She was the national coordinator of the Bloc de Esquerda between 2012 and 2023, and a member of the Assembly of the Republic from 2009 to 2023.

CDU elects deputy

The head of the CDU list, João Oliveira, 44, was a deputy between the X and XIV legislative assemblies. He was born in Évora and graduated from the Faculty of Law. From 2013 to 2022 he was the parliamentary leader of the PKP.
