The head of Chegi’s European Union list considered Sunday to be a “bad day” for the party after it failed to win the election and vowed to “represent Portugal and the Portuguese people.”
When the party first presented itself in the European elections, Chega elected two MEPs, António Tangier Correa and Thiago Moreira de Sá, without being able to challenge the president to become the political force with the most votes.
“Today was not the best day for Chegi. There are defeats and victories, victories and defeats, I am very used to this in life,” the first candidate said in a speech at the end of election night at a hotel in Lisbon.
António Tangier Correa said it was a “disgrace” that the party only managed to win two seats in the European Parliament.
“There are two of us, but we are good, and we are going to Brussels to work, to represent Portugal, to represent the Portuguese,” he emphasized.
