The Biden administration determined that a Chinese spy balloon that flew over the United States last week had electronic surveillance technology capable of monitoring US communications, according to a senior State Department official.
The balloon “was capable of collecting information from signals” and was part of a fleet that flew over “more than 40 countries on five continents,” the report said. CNN International.
“We know that China used these balloons for surveillance,” the official said. “High-resolution images of the U-2 flybys showed that the balloon was capable of conducting intelligence-gathering operations.”
Signal intelligence refers to information that is collected by electronic means such as communications and radar.
