“This research focuses on who produces the content, who distributes it, and the people who are directly affected by it,” he explained CM Rita Basilio, the researcher in charge of the project, adds that women are the main targets. For the researcher, the motivation behind this practice of nonconsensual disclosure of intimate content is associated with “humiliation” in romantic relationships or even a form of “retribution.” “There is a tendency to normalize this practice without reporting it to the authorities. This is a stigma identical to the stigma of domestic violence, because victims want to report it, but they are ashamed,” concluded Rita Basilio.
On the other hand, there are also young people who feel comfortable sharing this type of content on apps and sending sexually explicit messages online. Given the lack of legal regulation and control of platforms, there is a tendency for this practice to increase.
