IL wants IGF to audit compensation paid to public companies over the past two decades

This Wednesday, IL recommended that the government ask the General Inspectorate of Finance to conduct an audit of compensation paid over the past two decades by public companies to managers following a controversial compensation from CP to the mobility minister.

Speaking to reporters at the Assembly of the Republic, Liberal Initiative (IL) MP Carlos Guimarães Pinto said there was “severe unequal treatment” between private and public sector workers that needed to be clarified.

The IL MP said it was unacceptable that an employee of a state-owned company, when he decided to leave or retire, had “more than several tens of thousands of euros as a severance bonus”, unlike an employee in the private sector. who, he said, “will only receive his last salary and vacation days.”

“This seems to us an unspeakable, absolutely bad way of handling public money, and we will therefore ask the Inspectorate General of Finance (IGF) to look into the size of these bonuses, that is, how many employees of public companies received this bonus,” he announced.

In the IL draft resolution, the party specifies that it wants the audit to cover the last two decades and “compensation of administrators and managers of government agencies and the public business sector.”

IL recommends that this audit evaluate “the legality of these compensations in cases of direct transfer from one government position to another, indicating the dates, positions, amounts, organizations and individuals involved.”

Carlos Guimarães Pinto stressed that IL wants to understand whether a similar practice to what happened at CP, where, in his words, there are “more than 400 people receiving this bonus,” is a “repeated practice” in other public companies.

Asked if he thought the mobility minister should resign, the IL MP said it was not the competence of Cristina Pinto Díaz that was at stake, despite acknowledging that the governor had become “politically more fragile.”

“This goes far beyond the question of the secretary of state, whether she should stay or not… We have a problem with the way public companies manage public money, and it’s a structural problem that we need to focus on,” he said.

Asked if he saw similarities between this case and that of former Finance Minister Alexandra Reis, Carlos Guimarães Pinto said there were similarities but also “important differences.”

“In the case of Alexandra Reis, there was a conflict with the CEO, who wanted Alexandra Reis to leave. In this case, not even that: because the management of CP did not consider her an incompetent person, otherwise she was not deputy president,” he said, adding that CP must explain why Cristina Pinto Diaz left the company with compensation “by mutual agreement.” , if she considers herself competent.

The IL MP also criticized what he saw as hypocrisy on the part of the PS and the government, highlighting that in the case of the Socialists, they claimed that the Alexandra Reis case was legitimate, and now they are attacking Cristina Pinta Díaz.” ethically and politically,” while the executive branch does the opposite, “because she’s your secretary of state.”

“In our case, we believe both cases are reprehensible and make people politically vulnerable,” he said.
