Pope Francis warned Sunday of a “culture of rejection” and “ideological and populist temptations,” expressing concern about a “crisis of democracy” and criticizing abstention from elections.
“It is clear that in today’s world democracy, let’s face it, is not in good health. This question interests and worries us because the good of humanity is at stake,” the pontiff lamented to 1,000 people gathered in Trieste, northeastern Italy, to close the Social Week organized by the Italian Catholic Church.
Without naming any countries, Francisco warned against “ideological and populist temptations” on the same day France votes in a second round of legislative elections that could be won by the far right.
