Jeronimo de Souza delivers his last speech this Sunday as the parliamentary leader of the PCP. Politics will replace Paulo Raimundo.
The current leader of the Communist Party of Portugal began by saying that the meetings of the central committee of the party will be held on November 12 and 13.
Subsequently, he presented several criticisms of the decisions taken by the current government of Portugal and the proposed state budget for 2023, where he says that it “does not guarantee conditions for workers” and “exacerbates external dependence”.
He also warns that “it is necessary to protect public services”, to start “decrease in family income.”
After 18 years of leadership, Jeronimo de Souza says he will not continue as an MP, but he remains a member of the national commission and leaves a message: “We need to strengthen the parliamentary group.”
The decision to leave the position of PKP parliamentary leader is due to health concerns, as there was a “qualitative change” in his abilities, and it is said that this “was on his own initiative, taking into account the operation and the consequences.” but “I leave my head high,” Jeronimo de Souza said after being asked by journalists about his permanence as an MP.
Young communist leader Duarte Alves is the next name on the list of candidates for the Assembly of the Republic from the Lisbon constituency where Jeronimo de Sousa was elected.
Without mentioning Duarte Alves by name, the outgoing leader said: “I can say that we are able to move forward with a dynamic solution.”
Duarte Alves, an economist by profession, was one of the youngest members of the last legislature. After failing in the legislative elections in January 2022, he began working as a parliamentary adviser on the communist bench. At the parliamentary level, he was known for his intervention in the commission of inquiry into the losses recorded by Novo Banco and attributed to the Resolution Fund.
As regards the position of general secretary of the party, Paulo Raimundo was chosen in the communist leadership to replace him: “He is a comrade from the younger generation, whose life path is marked by diverse experience, abilities, inclusion in a team prepared for responsibility that links the social dimension with communication, contact and identification with the work and the masses, with the work of the party, its organizations and activists.”
The PCP announced on Saturday evening that General Secretary Jeronimo de Souza will step down after contemplating his health. Paulo Raimundo, 46, will succeed Jeronimo de Souza, who led the party for 18 years.
The outgoing general secretary had a mandate until 2024 and will be replaced by one of the few leaders who are part of the party’s most limited bodies – the Political Commission and the Secretariat. Paulo Raimundo is a prominent figure in the communist bases, but unknown in the media.
