New Metropolitan Transport Company in Porto approved by 14 out of 17 municipalities

The Metropolitan Council of Porto (CmP) unanimously approved this Friday of those present – 12 of the 17 municipalities that comprise it were present – the creation of a metropolitan transport company for the Metropolitan Region of Porto (AMP).

Vila do Conde, Vale de Cambra, Maia, Paredes and Trofa did not participate in the meeting, and the President of the MLC, Eduardo Vitor Rodrigues, told those present that the first two municipalities informed him of the “approval vote” and that they “missed because they had an institutional program that needed to be accomplished today.”

“On my part, all the steps have been taken and everything corresponds to what everyone, one way or another, made us feel (…). There is no other goal here other than to make it work the way it should.” “, he said in an opening note, also President of the Chamber of Vila Nova de Gaia.

Then the vice-president of the Chamber of Porto, Filipe Araujo, intervened, clarifying that “although sometimes it may seem that [os municípios] divided, they are actually trying to maintain their position because the focus is on good urban transport and Porto is very interested in that.”

The Mayor of Porto also warned of “the need for the transport company to have an analytical record regarding ticket sales (…) and this is very important for the company that will manage all the ticketing and verification commissions coming from the various operators, namely Metro do Porto , STCP and operator Unir”.

The mayor of Oliveira de Azemeis, Joaquim Jorge, expressed “doubts and reservations about the work of the new metropolitan company” and noted that although the municipality he heads “does not have a metro, trains, boats, funiculars or even scooters, there is a “metropolitan spirit” “, therefore, “they will form part of the share capital of the company, being among the municipalities that will contribute the most to this capital and, ultimately, will be the least of those to benefit from it.”

From the side of the Chamber of Povoa de Varzim, President Aires Pereira emphasized that “the day the buses start running, the big problems that they will have to overcome will begin,” highlighting the “efforts of the Executive Committee” to implement the project. land – a view shared by Gondomar Mayor Marco Martins, who announced on Monday the launch of an “information campaign for the population”, stressing that Porto’s public transport network is “not changing”.

Once the establishment of the company is approved, the process moves to the Court of Accounts.
