The PKP secretary general used International Women’s Day to warn that a possible shift to the right in Sunday’s legislative elections could threaten women’s rights.
“Women’s rights are not and cannot be guaranteed, as we see every day in practice, by right-wing politicians, no matter where they come from,” said Paulo Raimundo at a meeting dedicated to International Women’s Day held in Vila Nova de Gaia. .
For the CDU leader, the recent controversy over the possible resumption of debate on a referendum on voluntary termination of pregnancy was an example of what the right could do if it wins on Sunday.
“Some want to resume the project that we interrupted in 2015, as well as the path of voluntary termination of pregnancy. If it were not for the struggle of women and the decisive role of the CDU in ousting the SDP and SDS from power, but also those who are in Chege and Illinois this Friday, and this project has gained more wings, and this Friday we will be in complete regression,” he emphasized.
On the last day of the election campaign, which the HDZ concludes in the north with two initiatives in the Porto district and a final rally in the Braga district, the communist leader also attacked other parties, in his opinion, just for this. Friday concerns about equality, as well as condemnation of the pay gap between men and women.
“This Friday everyone will talk about equality, but in practice, because of their choices, they are all responsible for the situation in which we find ourselves. This Friday we are faced with increased pay discrimination between men and women. “There is nothing that can justify this; by solving this, we are solving an important part of equality and problems. Equal work, equal pay. That, yes, is also the satisfaction of April,” he said.
Considering International Women’s Day a “day of celebration”, Paulo Raimundo described the CDU to about 150 people as the “power of women” and praised the importance of women in the functioning of the country, praising their “fibre” despite the biggest obstacles they face on a daily basis.
“It is also a day of celebration for those who know there is still so much to achieve. (…) They should indeed be respected and valued for the unique and defining role they play in everyday life. life of our country,” he remarked, appealing directly to your voice: “On Sunday, when every woman comes to the voting booth, unprejudiced and freed from the conditioning operation that enters our home every day, the only voting option that she has, – this is for the CDU.”
According to the PKP Secretary General, the fight for women’s rights “is also a fight for democracy,” reaffirming the need to establish effective equality between men and women.
“Anyone who thinks there can be full democracy without full rights for women is very mistaken. These women are making, as they always have, a fundamental contribution to creating wealth and keeping the country running. There is no sector in which women cannot work. to be in the forefront,” he concluded.
