Angola authorities detained four people at 4 de Fevereiro International Airport in Luanda who were trying to leave the country with more than US$1.5 million (€1.4 million) hidden in their luggage.
The four men, three Guineans from Guinea-Conakry and one Angolan, aged between 27 and 59, were found on board as they prepared to travel to Addis Ababa, according to a statement from the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC). Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.
In addition to the SIC, elements of the Customs and Fiscal Police, the State Intelligence and Security Service (SINSE), the General Directorate of Revenue (AGT) and the Migration and Aliens Service (SME) were involved in the operation.
Angola law allows you to carry a maximum of $10,000 (€9,200) with you without notifying the tax authorities.
Anyone leaving the country with higher amounts will need to provide declarations of the origin of the funds, as well as how they were obtained, by completing an official form from the authorities.
