The charter granted by D. Teresa 900 years ago causes a celebration in the streets of Viseu.

The streets of Viseu will be adorned to welcome D. Teresa on the 27th in a procession that will mark the beginning of the celebrations for the 900th anniversary of the charter granted by the queen of the territory in 1123.

“The party will be on the street,” Leonor Barata, councilor for culture of the municipality, announced this Wednesday, explaining that there will be “a lot of street art performances in the afternoon of this day, especially in the historical center, which will end with a historical procession reminiscent of 900 Anniversary of the Charter”, between Solar do Viño do Dao and the cemetery of the cathedral.

Leonor Barata said that there would be 200 extras in the procession and that “the streets will be ready to receive Queen D. Teresa, who will once again hand over the charter to the man who now rules the city,” President Fernando Ruas.

In the courtyard of the cathedral there will be a “medieval feast” in which medieval public dances will be offered and in which 80 dancers will take part, after which there will be a concert with the participation of the groups Retimbrar and Sopa da Pedra, with the guests Gira Sol Azul and Teresa Salgueiro added.

On the weekend of the 27th and 28th, the Aquilino Ribeiro Park will also host the Crafts Fair, which will bring together 50 operators associated with various crafts, knowledge and traditions such as pewter, wood, weaving, Tibaldinho embroidery, ceramics, weaving and costume jewelry.

Actress Sophia Moura of the Mochos do Telhado will play D. Teresa during the six months of the celebration, which will end on October 31st.

According to Leonor Barat, this half year, D. Teresa “will appear in the city and in the territory”, visiting for example Feira de São Mateus, a weekly market and shopping center, to “cause a clash between two eras” and until then, until, who knows, she becomes the “Queen of Instagram”.

The goal is “to allow everyone to interact with the Queen and to have the story run in a more informal and easy way,” he justified.

The Cultural Adviser said the municipality understood that the celebration of the 900th anniversary of D. Teresa’s charter “should be a pretext to promote understanding of the territory.”

With the motivation given by D. Teresa, the municipality prepared “a program of reflection, action, very collaborative and shared with the living forces of the city and with the community,” he stressed, adding that this was discussed with local agents. and includes more than 20 partners.

“This is such a large-scale event that we need the cooperation of everyone,” he stressed.

In the program: opening of the exhibition “O Foral de Viseu de D. Teresa. 1123_usos e customs” at the Museum of the History of the City, the release of a commemorative stamp in cooperation with CTT, the series of talks “It all started with her”, a small-format show in schools for students in grades 5-6, a cartoon competition and other initiatives.

In August and September the program will expand to Feira de Sant Mateus with some initiatives inspired by the Middle Ages with a modern approach.

This year, Municipality Day (September 21) is meant to “celebrate the relationships established over the past 900 years,” said Leonor Barata.

On this day, the parade will combine history with ethnography, in a parade of customs and customs of parish folklore groups, in which groups from friendly cities and sister cities will take part, with their traditional costumes, songs, dances and music, in total 800 people.

Leonor Barata added that September will also see “a more academic series of conferences focusing on medieval history and the territory’s connection to that history and the birth of local government”, which will serve to reflect on “what Viseu intends to do”. be like a territory in 900 years.”

The end of the celebrations is scheduled for October 31 – King D. Duarte’s birthday in Viseu – a medieval dinner.

“These wakes are strict and have a very strong historical focus, but our goal is not to create a nostalgic idea. Our idea is also to contribute to thinking about the future, in which we take the participation of young people and various institutions.” , — stressed Leonor Barata.

Fernando Ruas believed that “If D. Teresa were alive, she would be happy with the way this community has developed.”

A charter issued in May 1123 by D. Teresa, the original of which is in Torre do Tombo, established the municipality and regulated its administration, duties and privileges.

According to a recently signed cooperation agreement, the municipality of Santa Maria da Feira is a strategic partner for these celebrations.
