The Pentagon overestimated the cost of ammunition, missiles and other equipment sent to Ukraine by about $3 billion (about 2.7 billion euros)This was announced on Thursday by a Senate aide and a spokesman for the Department of Defense, Reuters reports.
According to two senior Defense Department officials, the error was the result of a higher than reasonable value for weapons that were removed from US stockpiles and then sent to Ukraine.
“We found inconsistencies in how we assessed the equipment we handed over to Ukraine,” a senior Defense Department official told Reuters. Sources said Congress will be notified of the accounting adjustment.
A Defense Department spokesman said it is possible that the number of overestimated weapons could top $3 billion as the Pentagon takes a closer look at the situation.
While it is not known how Congress will react to the news, the change in equipment pricing could delay the need for the Biden administration to ask Congress for more funds for Ukraine as the fight for the debt ceiling intensifies.
