Iran’s president on Monday appointed a new secretary to the Supreme National Security Council, replacing longtime and powerful official Ali Shamkhani, who was implicated in a recent spy scandal.
President Ebrahim Raisi issued a decree replacing Shamkhani, who has also been the target of persistent allegations of corruption, which he has always denied, and allegations of maintaining close ties with a British-Iranian who was hanged in Iran on espionage charges earlier this year.
Shamkhani was a key player in negotiations with the West over the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. He was also in power during the tense years that followed then-President Donald Trump’s decision in 2018 to unilaterally pull the United States out of the deal.
