Documents from Fernand de Magalhães’ first circumnavigation of the world have been added to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) Memory of the World Register, the organization said on Wednesday.
The first circumnavigation of the world, between 1519 and 1522, is among the 64 new collections inscribed on the Register of Memory published this Wednesday by UNESCO. With 64 more collections registered in the Memory of the World Register, there are now 494 collections registered.
The journey, led by Fernand de Magalhain and completed by Sebastian Elcano, is “a milestone in the history of mankind for several reasons.” “Most obviously, the people who made this journey were the first to complete a complete orbit around the Earth,” said a UNESCO communiqué released this Wednesday.
