Russia on Thursday summoned the ambassadors of Germany, Denmark and Sweden to express “strong protests” over the alleged lack of results from national investigations into the sabotage of the two Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea in September 2022.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Russian diplomats complained to ambassadors about the “inability” of the respective countries to ensure transparency in investigations due to the refusal of the authorities of Germany, Denmark and Sweden to cooperate with Russia in the case. .
Moscow also protested the lack of response to Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin’s requests to the three countries to allow the Russian gas company Gazprom, the operator of the pipeline, to participate in the investigation.
“It was obvious that these countries were not interested in finding out the true circumstances of this sabotage. On the contrary, by their actions they are clearly dragging out time and trying to hide the traces and true perpetrators of the crime, which, as we think, are well-known countries,” Russia said.
Moscow accused the “Anglo-Saxon” countries led by the United States of sabotage, which it called “international terrorism.”
Swedish authorities said in April that it was still unclear who was behind the sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines in September last year, and that the investigation into the “complex” case was ongoing.
In total, two leaks were discovered in each gas pipeline (both non-operational), two in the Danish area and two in the Swedish area, all in international waters, which the respective governments immediately classified as an act of sabotage, also pointing to finding the statesman guilty.
Nord Stream, which began operations in 2011, had been shut down before the incident, first for “scheduled maintenance work” and then due to an alleged oil leak at the only operating Russian compressor station that Russia claims it could not prevent. for repairs due to Western sanctions.
In turn, Nord Stream 2 was never put into operation, as Germany blocked its certification even before Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine.
