Four of the seven people arrested for drug trafficking in Madeira on Monday will be awaiting trial in remand, the Comarca court said on Friday, citing the other three had been released by the Ministry of Public Administration.
The arrest of the alleged traffickers took place in Funchal following a Judicial Police (PJ) operation that resulted in 20 searches and the seizure of 10 high-end cars and more than 66,000 euros.
Of the four people awaiting trial on remand, two have been charged with aggravated drug trafficking and money laundering offenses, Filipe Camara, president of the Madeira District Court, told Lusa.
Another of the detainees was charged with drug trafficking and driving without a license, while another was charged with an aggravated drug trafficking offense.
The Madeira Court emphasizes the cooperation of the court staff in this process, as despite the fact that they went on strike after 17:00 (overtime), they agreed to continue their work, preventing the interrogation of detainees from being interrupted again, as happened on Wednesday. and Thursday is the fair.
Operation PJ, which was carried out in accordance with the warrants, resulted in the arrest in Funchal of four men aged between 26 and 56 and the confiscation of 10 luxury cars worth about 1,565,000 euros. , 66,540 euros in cash and other relevant evidence.
“During the same operation, when the searches were carried out, three other men aged 22 to 42 were also detained at the scene of the crime for possession of prohibited weapons and drugs,” the SP said in a statement. .
According to the police, this operation “was the result” of a complex of investigations launched in 2021 against an organized group “engaged in the acquisition, importation and distribution of synthetic drugs in significant quantities.”
The judicial police also clarified that in the course of this investigation, 12 more people have already been detained on various occasions, four of whom are in pre-trial detention, two with an obligation to stay at home, and the rest with “other coercive measures.” .
The Judicial Panel also reported that, in the context of other police actions carried out earlier, “a significant amount of synthetic drugs was seized by this police and PSP, in total about 22 kg.”
The PSP statement said Monday’s arrests were made by the Criminal Investigation Department (DIC) of Madeira, in close cooperation with the Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) and with the support of the Madeira Territorial Command of the Republican National Guard (RNR).
