Joao Almeida (UAE) this Friday lost to the main contenders for the final victory in the Tour of Italy on a bike about two tens of seconds. But he is still confidently taking 3rd place in the personal overall standings and leaves this Saturday for the penultimate stage of the struggle for something more.
On stage 19 between Longarone and Tre Cime di Lavaredo (183 km), everything was decided in the final part, when the road rose sharply. In the mountain race, Joao Almeida climbed together with Geraint Tomas (Ineos) and Primož Roglic (Jumbo), placing 1st and 2nd overall respectively. In the last five kilometers, he even tried to take off, but to no avail. He was delayed when Roglic attacked, managed to recover, but no longer resisted the second attack, then Thomas, in the last two kilometers.
Colombian Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain) became the winner of the stage. Roglic finished 4th (1:46), Tomas 5th (1:49) and Almeida 6th (2:08).
Overall, Tomas is in the lead, Roglic is second with 26 seconds and Almeira is third with 59 seconds. This Saturday is going to be a very tough 18.6 km individual time trial in the mountains.
