Two operational assistants at Infante D. Pedro Hospital, Aveiro, eight funeral homes and seven funeral directors were convicted of running a funeral bribery scheme. Two hospital employees – one from the mortuary and the other from the Medico-Legal Office – until the end of 2015 accepted tips ranging from 5 to 100 euros, meals and other benefits in favor of agencies or funeral homes. One of the defendants even received the corpse of a man who did not die in that hospital.
One of the operational assistants was sentenced to two years and three months of suspended liberty and a payment of 4,800 euros, and the other to 4,500 euros. The agent is sentenced to one year and three months probation and her agency pays 44,000 euros. Other agents pay from 1080 to 1620 euros, and agencies – from 18 to 27 thousand euros.
