Twitter has decided to scrap the EU’s code of conduct on online disinformation, but Brussels has already warned that the company’s commitments remain unchanged, Commissioner Thierry Breton said.
“You can run, but you can’t hide. In addition to voluntary promises, the fight against disinformation will become a legal obligation, present in the law on digital services of August 25. Our teams are ready to enforce the law,” said the commissioner for the domestic market and industry, via a message published on social networks.
The set of best practices, launched in 2018 and signed by some 30 members including Meta, Google and TikTok, aims to prevent those who spread false information from generating ad revenue.
Since Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter in October 2022, the company stopped warning its users about the spread of potentially false information about covid-19 and changed the “blue check” functionality that authenticated profiles with the public interest.
