Erdogan re-elected President of Turkey with 52% of votes

Erdogan was re-elected President of Turkey with 52.14% of the vote in the second round of the presidential elections held this Sunday, promotes Reuters with reference to the Supreme Electoral Council. Kılıçdaroglu won 47.86% of the vote. Candidates share more than two million votes, so the victory of the opponent is no longer possible.

In Istanbul, Erdogan’s supporters began celebrating even before the final results were announced, waving Turkish or ruling party flags and honking cars.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who ruled Turkey for 20 years, was elected in the second round to a new five-year term after coming very close to winning the May 14 election.

Polling stations closed at 5:00 pm, two hours behind in Lisbon.

The Turkish opposition this Sunday denounced violations in the second round of the presidential election, such as physical attacks on election observers in the southwestern region and vote-rigging.

Turkey has about 85 million inhabitants and more than 61 million registered voters in a process where voting is mandatory.

After a surprise victory in the first round of Turkey’s presidential election two weeks ago, Tayyip Erdogan was the top favorite to win, although the opposition believes their candidate is capable of leading a historic turn in a vote that could be decisive for the country’s future.
