A Hong Kong journalist on Monday won an appeal overturning her conviction for illegally accessing a vehicle database while investigating a police operation against demonstrators during the 2019 anti-government protests.
In April 2021, a local court fined Bao Choi Yuk-ling, 39, HK$6,000 (€769) for allegedly providing the Department of Transportation with false evidence to access a car registration database while trying to investigate police response to an attack on demonstrators.
Five judges of the Hong Kong court of last resort, including a descendant of the Portuguese Roberto Ribeiro, ruled unanimously in favor of Choi, overturning the guilty verdict and sentence.
