The United States warned China on Monday that “it won’t be long before anyone gets hurt” after maneuvers by a Chinese warship this weekend near Taiwan, a few meters from the US destroyer USS Chung-Hoon.
White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby expressed “US concern” at a press conference about China’s “unsafe and unprofessional” behavior.
Events of this type “can lead to miscalculations when there are pieces of metal of this size, whether in the air or at sea,” John Kirby said.
“If they work so closely,” he continued, “it won’t be long before there is a mistake in judgment, or just one mistake, and someone gets hurt. And it becomes unacceptable, it should be unacceptable for them too,” he said.
John Kirby believed that Chinese forces were becoming increasingly aggressive, mainly in the Taiwan Strait and the South Asian Sea.
The incident between a US destroyer and a Chinese warship in the Taiwan Strait on Saturday came after the Pentagon on May 30 condemned “unnecessary” and “aggressive” maneuvers by a Chinese fighter jet to intercept a US spy plane in the South China Sea.
