Kyiv on Tuesday blamed Moscow for the dam explosion and called on residents of areas along the Dnieper River in southern Ukraine to leave their homes.

Russian emergency services said about 600 homes were flooded after the Russian-controlled Kakhovka Dam in southern Ukraine broke overnight, Russian state news agency TASS reported, citing Reuters.

“From 7:30 am [05h30 de Portugal], the following settlements are completely or partially flooded: Tyaginka, Lviv, Odradokamenka, Berislavsky district, Ivanovka, Nikolskoe Tokarovka, Ponyatovka, Belozerka and Ostrovsky district of Kherson, Kherson region. We know that other cities will be flooded, and we are ready for this. Kherson Governor Alexander Prokudin on Telegram.

“The military administration and all services, including the State Emergency Service and the police, were put on alert at five in the morning. There are about 16,000 people on the right bank of the Kherson region in the critical zone,” he adds.

The Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant is not in “immediate danger” after flooding caused by the partial destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station on the Dnieper River, AFP reports, citing the Special Atomic Energy Agency.

“There is no immediate nuclear danger,” the UN agency said, referring to the possible consequences of the destruction of the dam on the Dnieper River.

The Kakhovka Dam area is occupied by Russian troops, who have already accused Kyiv of attacking infrastructure that caused the flood.
