This Friday, the President of the Government of Madeira announced that it is planned to change the Regulations of the Community Forum to create a fund to support the most vulnerable migrants due to the unstable situation in South Africa.
The head of the regional government was part of the delegation of the President of the Republic, which visited the South African community this week as part of the June 10th celebrations, and said this Friday that “the visit went well.”
“From an economic point of view, things are going well, the only drawback is the insecurity that is widespread in this country,” he said.
According to the Madeiran official, “the situation is not anarchy, but it is worrying, primarily because many of the Madeiran exiles, by virtue of their activities, are more susceptible to attacks.”
Albuquerque stressed that the regional government has supported homes in South Africa and is “considering”, in line with the terms of the Community Forum, an executive branch advisory body, “the establishment of a fund to support families who are more psychologically vulnerable.”
“This will be adopted at the Community Forum and will be included in the next regional budget,” he said.
The head of the island also mentioned that most of the investment in real estate in Madeira is made by emigrants from South Africa.
Asked about the need for a direct air link between that country and Madeira, he said it was “a little utopian to think that TAP could ever compete” in operating this type of flight because “the South African market is very competitive.” “and has operations of major global companies.
“The big advantage is that we [Madeira] with 90 direct routes and it is possible to go to the European capital and then come directly to Madeira,” he added.
Miguel Albuquerque also supported the position of Madeira Legislative Assembly President José Manuel Rodríguez, who announced on Thursday that he had applied to the Constitutional Court to review the constitutionality of the medical death law for violating the right to a hearing in the autonomous regions. throughout its legislative process.
“If it is written in the law that the regions should be heard, then this is unconstitutional,” he stressed, but noted: “I hope that the Constitutional Court, which is always against the regions, will also say that everything is correct.”
Miguel Albuquerque spoke to reporters on the sidelines of his visit to the second phase of construction work for the sports hall in Estrita de Camara de Lobos, which is due to be completed in the first quarter of 2024 and represents an investment by the Madeira Executive Authority (PSD/CDS) of the order 5.2 million euros.
