Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi travels to Ukraine this Monday to present a program of assistance to President Volodymyr Zelensky in the face of reduced water inflow to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
The Argentine diplomat indicated that he would go to the nuclear power plant to assess the situation resulting from the explosion of the Kakhovka dam and to direct the rotation and reinforcement of the IAEA team at the plant, which has been under the control of Russian troops since February. 2022.
The breach of the dam has reduced the level of stored water, which is used to cool nuclear reactors.
On Sunday, the water level was 11.27 meters, five less than it was before the explosion. This level is still sufficient to continue supplying water to the plant.
For several months now, the IAEA has been warning about the danger posed by explosions near the plant, which is the largest in Europe.
The IAEA has pushed for the creation of a safety zone and non-combat operations in the zone, or the storage of weapons at the facilities, among other recommendations to avoid an accident.
