The UN Security Council on Wednesday adopted a resolution recognizing the role of hate speech, racism and other forms of discrimination in the escalation of conflicts and calling on states and international organizations to publicly condemn this practice.
The resolution, proposed by the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom, was adopted unanimously by 15 “yes” votes of all member states that make up the United Nations (UN) Security Council.
“Today, the members of the Security Council are voting for a draft resolution reaffirming their commitment to upholding the universal principles of tolerance and peaceful coexistence. As the text makes clear, these principles, along with human rights and gender equality, do not conflict with interests. Rather, they mutually reinforce each other. They need to be promoted and implemented to achieve peace, security, stability and sustainable development,” UAE diplomat Lana Nusseibé said ahead of the vote.
