Authorities in four provinces in the Netherlands confirmed this Wednesday that their ports’ digital pages have seen interruptions during this week due to cyberattacks launched by pro-Russian hackers challenging the delivery of tanks to Ukraine.
The digital pages of the ports of Groningen, Amsterdam, Den Helder and Rotterdam have been the targets of cyberattacks, due to which they have been inaccessible for several hours or days, at various times and during the last week.
The cyberattacks contained the signature of pro-Russian computer bloggers called “NoName057(16)”, who claim that their actions are in response to the Netherlands’ announcement of its intention to purchase tanks from Switzerland to deliver them to Ukraine, according to messages posted on the group’s Telegram channel.
In 2022, Germany, Denmark or Spain asked Switzerland for permission to re-export Swiss weapons to Ukraine, but Switzerland’s traditional neutral position does not allow Swiss weapons to be sent to warring countries or sold through third parties.
However, the Swiss government approved the shipment of 25 Leopard 2 tanks to Germany in late May after assurances that they would not be sent back to Ukraine.
The armed conflict in Ukraine, which began with the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022, plunged Europe into the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
