UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday advocated “prevention” as the “most effective” approach to the threat of terrorism, urging member states to focus on the underlying conditions that lead to radicalization.
At the start of the United Nations (UN) Anti-Terrorism Week, a biennial meeting of member states and international partners in the fight against terrorism, Guterres said that terrorists take advantage of local vulnerabilities and political, economic and security instability. emphasizing that “poverty, inequality and social exclusion fuel” this type of crime.
“Prejudice and discrimination directed against certain groups, cultures, religions and ethnic groups fuel terrorism. And criminal activities such as money laundering, illegal mining, and trafficking in weapons, drugs, antiques, and people provide its funding. Terrorism thrives in complex crises. that are consuming our world,” he said.
