The governments of Germany and China signed a cooperation agreement in Berlin on Tuesday aimed at establishing a dialogue mechanism on climate change and the transition to green technologies.
The agreement was signed during the official visit of Chinese Premier Li Qiang to Germany.
In the document, Berlin and Beijing reaffirmed their commitment to the Paris Agreement and the goal of keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Such an objective should be based on “principles of fairness, common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capacities”, according to the text of the agreement quoted by the Spanish agency EFE.
Both parties reaffirmed their intention to achieve emission neutrality by 2045 in the case of Germany and move towards this goal by 2060 in the case of China.
The dialogue mechanism aims to “achieve practical results in the field of green and low-carbon development”.
The goal is to “promote a green, low-carbon transition to accelerate climate change action.”
Cooperation will focus on areas such as policies, standards and certification regulations for industrial decarbonization.
The two countries will also facilitate the exchange of strategies to reduce emissions from the production of cement, steel, chemicals and paper.
They also propose to cooperate in the field of energy transition by expanding the capacity of renewable energy sources and developing the green energy market, as well as in the field of energy saving and energy efficiency.
Other issues to be addressed by the two countries at various levels are carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions trading and sustainable transport.
In a statement following intergovernmental consultations on Tuesday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Li Qiang stressed the need for cooperation in the face of major global challenges, including combating climate change.
The agreement was signed by German Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economy and Climate Protection Robert Habeck and Chairman of the China National Development and Reform Commission Zheng Shanjie.
