Belgium’s federal prosecutor’s office said this Wednesday that Italian MEP Andrea Cozzolino, suspected of involvement in the Qatargate case, has been charged with “corruption, criminal organization and money laundering.”
The 60-year-old Socialist MEP, whose immunity was lifted in February by the European Parliament, was detained four months ago in Italy and has been under judicial supervision ever since, pending execution of a European arrest warrant.
Cozzolino is the third MEP to be accused in the so-called Qatargate scandal that erupted in December 2022 when Belgian investigators found around €1.5 million in cash distributed in several suitcases during searches carried out in Brussels.
