Qatar wants to strengthen energy and economic ties with Russia

The Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar, Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani, this Thursday expressed a desire to strengthen ties with Russia in the field of energy, common economic projects and food security.

“Our countries are bound by long-standing ties of friendship. We have common interests on a wide range of issues, especially in the field of energy, energy markets, food security, our countries are connected by common economic projects,” he said. during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

At the meeting, which also sat around the Kremlin table, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, in charge of the energy portfolio, and Chancellor Sergei Lavrov, head of the Kremlin, noted that bilateral trade figures between Russia and Qatar are currently “relatively small” in absolute terms. .

“But there is solid untapped growth potential. We hope that the intergovernmental commission will develop effective proposals for its implementation,” he stressed.

Vladimir Putin said that this commission is headed by Alexander Novak.

Before meeting with the Russian President, the Prime Minister of Qatar met with Sergey Lavrov, with whom he discussed the intensification of political dialogue and the establishment of contacts between the relevant economic and investment departments, the Foreign Ministry said. Russia abroad.

Both politicians emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive and stable momentum in bilateral trade.

The Prime Minister of Qatar and Sergey Lavrov also discussed the international and regional agenda, focusing on the situation in Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, Sudan and the Palestinian territories.

The parties stressed the need to continue close coordination of approaches “to promote a comprehensive long-term settlement of regional conflicts through national dialogues that take into account the interests of all parties involved,” they said.

In addition, the heads of the two diplomats stressed the importance of ensuring stability in the Persian Gulf and creating a stable system of collective security in this strategic region of the world.
