President of the Republic of Cape Verde, José María Neves, praised the country’s wealth this Friday and said she could be a “pioneer” to help discover every corner of the archipelago.
“There is still a lot of unpublished in Cape Verde, we need to rediscover Cape Verde, and the President of the Republic can be a pioneer to show Cape Verde all the riches of the country,” said the head of state after visiting the Islets of Rombo nature reserve, in particular Ileu de Sima, the largest of a group of five islets located between the islands of Fogo and Brava.
Noting that the reserve is a “great discovery” and “great wealth”, the country’s highest judge called on all residents of Cape Verde to get acquainted with the islands and islets.
“We must start talking about Cape Verde in all its dimensions and all its wealth, the 10 islands and all the islets that make up the very rich heritage of Cape Verde,” he stressed.
The Rombo Islets or Seko Islets are located eight kilometers northwest of Brava Island, the smallest and most southerly of the Cape Verde archipelago, and 15 kilometers west of neighboring Fogo Island, classified as a protected natural reserve.
After visiting the complex natural reserve Ilheus Rombo e de Cima, José María Neves went to look at the state of conservation of this protected area, which preserves a significant part of the endemic and endangered fauna and flora.
The head of state visited the camp of the turtle conservation campaign launched periodically by Projeto Vitó, an environmental association created after saving the turtle more than a decade ago.
In October 2021, the association, led by Herculano Dinis, received the National Merit Medal from the then President of Cape Verde, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, for his contributions and environmental and social work.
Also in the colony of Rabo de Junco, José María Neves took part in a campaign to clean up the beaches where sea turtles nest, as part of the conservation and preservation of the environment carried out by non-governmental organizations and other public figures.
In a message issued by the President of the Republic, the Head of State highlighted the “great work” of the Vitó project carried out at the sites in partnership with a number of other NGOs.
“They are doing absolutely missionary work to protect the species,” he stressed, insisting on the need not only to show, but also to preserve all the wealth of the country.
The islanders were part of the agenda of the visit of the President of the Republic to Fogo Island, with a focus on environmental and climate action as part of ongoing actions integrated into the Decade of the Ocean.
